Umananda Devaloi is a Shiva temple on Umananda Island (Peacock Island) in the Brahmaputra River, opposite the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner's office in Guwahati. Known as the smallest inhabited riverine island in the world, it is accessible by country boats from the riverbank. The temple, built on Bhasmacala Hill, was originally constructed in 1694 CE by King Gadadhar Singha but was damaged by an earthquake in 1867.
The Temple features intricate rock-cut sculptures showcasing the artistry of Assamese craftsmen. It depicts Hindu deities including Surya, Ganesha, Shiva, Devi (with a scorpion emblem), and Vishnu with his ten avatars. Visitors reach the main shrine via steep steps. Beyond its religious significance, the temple offers a serene, peaceful environment, inviting visitors to relax and appreciate its tranquil beauty.
