All organisms can be classified according to their source of energy (sunlight or oxidizable chemical compounds) and their source of carbon for the synthesis of cellular material.

Autotrophs

  • Chemosynthetic autotrophs: Use energy from chemicals in the Earth to produce food. Examples include some bacteria.

  • Photosynthetic autotrophs: Use chlorophyll to capture energy from the sun and produce food through photosynthesis. Examples include plants and algae.

Heterotrophs

  • Herbivores: Eat only plants.

  • Carnivores: Eat only other animals.

  • Omnivores: Eat both plants and other animals.

  • Decomposers: Get nutrition from dead and decaying matter.
